A lovely client popped in to the boutique recently, after her yoga class at the famous local organic spa and farm shop, and as so often happens, she saw a piece of jewellery in the window which she absolutely loved and was compelled to come in and mooch around.
Once she knew the jewellery was handmade, British and ethical, and I could design and make a bespoke piece of jewellery for her, she decided she would like a pair of earrings, to replace a long lost and much loved pair of garnet heart drops.
Her brief was to use a good size red garnet heart shaped stone, in a very simple setting, she wanted an elegant contemporary pair of everyday wearable earrings, that would also look very special on the right occasion.
I showed her Indian and Mozambique garnet hearts in various weights and colours and we looked at various gold samples. The client chose a blood red Mozambique garnet and agreed that 9ct white gold heavy bezel settings would show off the stones beautifully, and give the earrings a simple contemporary style and hint of luxury.
I suggested we make the set garnet hearts into a charm which could be threaded onto a small heavy hammered hoop also in 9ct white gold. making these earrings incredibly versatile, other charms could be made and worn to suit the client’s mood and occasion. I made 2 weights of hoop so she could choose the weight she felt most comfortable with.
I find it is sometimes difficult for clients to visualise the final piece from a mere drawing, so help with sampling as much as I can. My fair trade jewellery is created to last a lifetime and it is made with a lot of love and passion. Every detail counts.
She collected the earrings on her birthday and was overjoyed at the effect they had. We are already working on a pair of apple green jade drops to add to the hoops.
